Sahadeva Krishna Flower From Heaven

Sahadeva responded to the offensive words of Shishupala, "If there be any king amongst you who cannot bear to see Keshava, the killer of the Keshi demon, as the first person worshiped, I will place my foot on his head." When Sahadeva lifted his foot, no king challenged him. Suddenly, a shower of flowers fell on Sahadeva and an unembodied voice exclaimed, "Excellent! Excellent!"

Bhisma Krishna Flower From Heaven

I adopt the vow of Brahmacharya (study and meditation in celibacy). If I die sonless, I shall yet attain to regions of perennial bliss in heaven!'

"Vaisampayana continued, 'Upon these words of the son of Ganga, the hair on the fisherman's body stood on end from glee, and he replied, 'I bestow my daughter!' Immediately after, the Apsaras and the gods with diverse tribes of Rishis began to rain down flowers from the firmament upon the head of Devavrata and exclaimed, 'This one is Bhishma (the terrible).' Bhishma then, to serve his father, addressed the illustrious damsel and said, 'O mother, ascend this chariot, and let us go unto our house.'

Pain Giver Relief

The Curse's Details:
  • Cause:
Ashwatthama used the powerful Brahmastra on the sleeping Pandava sons (Upapandavas) and aimed it at the womb of Uttara, the pregnant wife of Arjuna's son, Abhimanyu, to end the Kuru lineage.
  • Punishment:
Krishna, after reviving Parikshit with the same gem from Ashwatthama's forehead, cursed him to wander the earth for 3,000 years, experiencing perpetual suffering, no peace, and a festering wound on his forehead where the gem was removed.
  • Duration:
The curse lasts for 3,000 years, after which he is prophesied to be freed when Lord Kalki (the final avatar of Vishnu) appears.
  • Consequences:
Ashwatthama became a Chiranjivi (immortal), but his immortality brought torment, not glory, as he couldn't die or find rest, forever haunted by his guilt and the physical pain.
Key Elements:
  • Violation of Dharma:
The curse was a direct consequence of Ashwatthama's extreme rage and violation of ethical war codes (dharma) by attacking the innocent and unborn.
  • The Gem:
The divine jewel on his forehead, given for protection, was forcefully removed by Krishna, causing the incurable wound that symbolizes his punishment.

The Boon from Krishna
Bhishma had the power of icchamrityu (self-willed death) from his father, King Shantanu, meaning he could not die until he willed it. However, the arrows piercing his body caused severe agony. As he lay dying on the battlefield, waiting for the auspicious time of Uttarayan (the sun's northward passage) to pass away and attain liberation, Krishna visited him.
Krishna granted Bhishma the following to alleviate his suffering:
  • Freedom from Pain: Krishna bestowed a special grace upon Bhishma, freeing him from physical discomfort, burning sensations, hunger, and thirst.
  • Clarity of Mind: Krishna ensured that Bhishma maintained perfect clarity of perception, memory, and understanding. This was crucial because Krishna wanted Bhishma, a great statesman and scholar, to impart his vast knowledge of dharma (righteousness), statecraft (Rajneeti), and spiritual truths to the future king, Yudhishthira, before he died.
This interaction highlights Krishna's compassion and his acknowledgment of Bhishma's righteousness and devotion, despite their opposing sides in the war. Bhishma was then able to calmly share his final teachings with the Pandavas and ultimately leave his mortal body at the time of his choosing, his mind fixed on Lord Krishna.

Sanjaya Dhritarashtra Ashwatthama

 Sanjaya to Dhṛtarāṣṭra

in whom
  1. human and
  2. Varuna and
  3. Agneya and
  4. Brahma and
  5. Aindra and
  6. Narayana weapons are always present?
The high-souled Drona, having obtained the science of weapons from Rama have imparted (a knowledge of) all the celestial weapons unto his son desirous of seeing the latter adorned with all the accomplishments (of a warrior).

There is only one person in this world, viz., the son, and none else, whom people desire to become superior to themselves. All high-souled preceptors have this characteristic, viz., that they impart all the mysteries of their science unto either sons or devoted disciples.

Becoming his sire's pupil. O Sanjaya, and obtaining all those mysteries with every detail, the son of Saradwat's daughter has become a second Drona, and a great hero. Aswatthaman is equal
  1. to Karna in knowledge of weapons,
  2. to Purandara in battle,
  3. to Kartavirya in energy, and
  4. Vrihaspati in wisdom.
  1. In fortitude, that youth is equal to a mountain, and
  2. in energy to fire.
  3. In gravity, he is equal to an ocean, and
  4. in wrath, to the poison of the snake.
He is the
  1. foremost of all car-warriors in battle,
  2. a firm bowman, and
  3. above all fatigue.
  1. In speed he is equal to the wind itself and
  2. he careens in the thick of fight like Yama in rage.
  3. While his engaged in shooting arrows in battle, the very earth becomes afflicted.
  4. Of prowess incapable of being baffled, hero is never fatigued by exertions.
  5. Purified by the Vedas and by vows,
  6. he is a thorough master of the science of arms, like Rama, the son of Dasharatha.
  7. He is like the ocean, incapable of being agitated.

Arjuna to Yudhistira said, 'He, relying upon whose energy the Kauravas, having addressed themselves to the accomplishment of fierce feats, are blowing their conchs and staying with patience, he about whom thou hast thy doubts. O king, as to who he may be that is roaring so loud, having rallied the Dhartarashtras after the fall of the disarmed preceptor, he, who is

  1. endued with modesty,
  2. possessed of mighty arms,
  3. has the tread of an infuriated elephant,
  4. owns a face like that of a tiger,
  5. always achieves fierce feats, and dispels the fears of the Kurus, he upon whose birth Drona gave away a thousand kine unto Brahmanas of high worth, he O king, that is roaring so loud, is Aswatthaman. As soon as he was born, that hero neighed like Indra's steed and caused the three worlds to tremble at that sound. Hearing that sound, an invisible being, O lord, (speaking audibly) bestowed upon him the name of Aswatthaman (the horse-voiced).
  6. That superhuman being who is in that habit of displaying his friendship for all creatures,
  7. that hero, hearing of the seizure of his sire's locks, will certainly consume us all in battle today.
