After the Kurukshetra war, Dhritrarashtra asked Krishna, “I had hundred sons and all of them were killed in the war. Why? Krishna replied, “Fifty lifetimes ago, you were a hunter. While hunting, you tried to shoot a male bird, but it flew away. In anger, you ruthlessly slaughtered the hundred baby birds that were there in the nest. The father-bird had to watch in helpless agony. Because you caused that father-bird the pain of seeing the death of his hundreds sons, you too had to bear the pain of your hundred sons dying.
Dhritarastra said, "Ok, but why did I have to wait for fifty lifetimes?" Krishna answered, "You were accumulating punya (pious credits) during the last fifty lifetimes to get a hundred sons because that requires a lot of punya. Then you got the reaction for the papa (sin) that you have done fifty lifetimes ago."
Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita (4.17) gahana karmano gatih, that the way in which action and reaction works is very complex. God knows best which reaction has to be given at what time in what condition. Therefore, some reaction may come in this lifetime, some in the next and some in a distant future lifetime.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra appears in two subsections of the Mahābhārata which are often treated as stand-alone texts, and were both commented upon by Adi Shankara.
- He appears in the opening chapter of the Bhagavad Gītā, which takes place immediately before the start of the Kurukshetra War. The Gita's dialogue between Arjuna and Krishna is recounted as narrated to Dhṛtarāṣṭra by Sanjaya.
- Dhṛtarāṣṭra is also a central figure in the Sanatsujatiya, in which Dhṛtarāṣṭra asks many questions to Sanatsujata, a divine sage. Sanatsujata has been invoked through meditation by Vidura, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's half-brother and counselor. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Sanatsujatiya

- In the new version(Original had 100 divisions named Bharata) of Mahabharat, there are 18 parvan sections.
- The other name of Mahabharata is Jayam. Ja is equal to 8 and Yam is equal to 1.Jayam represents 81, but the maths principle in Sanskrit says ‘Ankaanam vaamato gati’ that is when Numbers are expressed lyrically they must be read from right to left. So Jayam means 18.
- Kurukshetra war fought for 18 days in 18 legions.
- The total Army participated in the war were 18 Akshauhini’s ( 7 for Pandavs and 11 for Kauravas). An Akshauhini was an ancient battle formation that consisted of 21,870 chariots ; 21,870 elephants; 65,610 cavalry and 109,350 infantry, each of these large number groups the digits add up to 18.
- Bhagavad Gita has also 18 Adhyayas.

The sixth day was marked by a prodigious slaughter. Drona caused immeasurable loss of life on the Pandava side. The formations of both the armies were broken. However, Bhima managed to penetrate the Kaurava formation and attacked Duryodhana. Duryodhana was defeated, but was rescued by others. The day's battle ended with the defeat of the Kauravas.
